Family organiser apps or a WhatsApp assistant?

Last updated

By Josh Macdonald, founder of Ordaily

Use a family organiser app such as Cozi, TimeTree or Skylight if you want one shared calendar and shopping list the whole family opens, and use a WhatsApp assistant such as Ordaily if your admin lives in your email and you want it sorted, drafted and reminded in the chat you already use. Many families use both. For what Ordaily does for parents in full, see an AI assistant for parents in South Africa.

The family organiser apps, and what each does well

These are the apps parents are most often pointed to. Each is described from the sources listed below, checked October 2026. We have not used them ourselves, and their prices are in US dollars.

How you use it: Its own app.

Price: Free, or from about $39 a year for Cozi Gold.

  • FamilyWall

A private family space: calendar, lists, meal plans, photos and a family locator, with one subscription covering the family.

How you use it: Its own app.

Price: Free with in app purchases, or from about $7.99 a month for Premium.

  • TimeTree

A simple shared calendar for a family, friends or any group, quick to set up.

How you use it: Its own app.

  • Skylight

A touchscreen calendar for the kitchen wall that the whole family can see. Its Magic Import turns school emails and PDFs into calendar events.

Price: The device from about $150, plus a subscription from about $39 a year.

  • Milo

Where Ordaily is different

  • It lives in WhatsApp. There is no new app to open; you message it by text or voice note in the chat you already use all day.
  • It reads your email. It sorts your Gmail into urgent, priority, must read and FYI, so the school notice that matters does not drown under the newsletters.
  • It drafts replies. It sends one only after you say yes, and on Lite Plus it writes in your own style.
  • It is for you, not the whole family. Each plan is one person. If you want one calendar the whole family looks at, a family app does that better.

Which should you choose?

A family organiser app, if…

you want one calendar and one shopping list that everyone at home can see and add to, or a screen on the kitchen wall.

Ordaily, if…

you are the default parent and most of the admin reaches you by email and WhatsApp, and you want it sorted, drafted and reminded without opening another app. See a little help for R299 a month.

Both, if…

the family shares one calendar in an app and your own inbox and reminders still need looking after.

Questions

Should I use a family organiser app or a WhatsApp assistant?
Use a family organiser app such as Cozi, TimeTree or Skylight if you want one shared calendar and shopping list the whole family opens, and use a WhatsApp assistant such as Ordaily if your admin lives in your email and you want it sorted, drafted and reminded in the chat you already use. Many families use both.
Is Ordaily a family calendar app like Cozi?
No. Cozi, FamilyWall and TimeTree give the whole family one calendar to share. Ordaily is a personal assistant for one person: it reads your Gmail, keeps your Google Calendar and reminds you on WhatsApp, and you do not open a separate app.
Can Ordaily replace a Skylight on the kitchen wall?
Not if you want a screen the children can see. Skylight is a device for the kitchen; Ordaily has no screen and lives in your WhatsApp. If what you need is your email sorted and your reminders kept, Ordaily does that from your phone.
Does Ordaily work in WhatsApp like Milo works by text?
Yes, Ordaily works in WhatsApp, by text or voice note. Milo works by SMS text message. Ordaily also reads your Gmail and drafts replies for your yes.
What does Ordaily cost compared with these apps?
Lite is R299 a month and Lite Plus, which adds your WhatsApp groups, is R499 a month, billed in rand. The family apps start free, with paid plans from about $4.49 a month for TimeTree Premium to about $79 a year for Cozi Max, and Skylight’s device from about $150 (checked October 2026).
Will it send anything without asking me?
No. Ordaily never sends, books or changes anything without your yes: every email reply and every invite waits on a card in WhatsApp for your yes, and after you approve you have 30 seconds to undo. It is built for POPIA, and your content is never used to train AI.
Can I use a family app and Ordaily together?
Yes. Keep the shared calendar and shopping list in the family app, and let Ordaily look after your inbox, your own calendar and your reminders in WhatsApp.
