School WhatsApp group overload: catch up without reading every message

Last updated

By Josh Macdonald, founder of Ordaily

Add Ordaily’s group number to the class group on Lite Plus (R499 a month), then ask it “what’s happening in the class group?” in your own WhatsApp chat. You get a private catch up of what you missed, and a private alert when someone tags you or writes your full name. Ordaily never posts in the group. For everything else Ordaily does for parents, see an AI assistant for parents in South Africa.

Too many messages in the parents group

The class group, the sports group, the lift club, the school gate group. Keeping up with ten WhatsApp groups as a parent means a steady stream of messages, and somewhere in them is the one about Friday’s early pickup. Mute the group and you worry you missed something; leave it unmuted and your phone never stops.

Ordaily on Lite Plus sits in the groups you choose and reads along, so you can mute them and ask for the short version when it suits you.

How it works

  1. Choose Lite Plus

Groups come with Lite Plus at R499 a month. Plain Lite, at R299, has no groups.

  2. Verify your number

Verify your WhatsApp number with a PIN, so Ordaily knows the group messages are for you.

  3. Add Ordaily’s group number

Add Ordaily’s group number (it’s different from the number you chat with) to the class group, like any other contact. If you are not an admin of the group, ask the admin to add it.

  4. Ask for a catch up

In your own chat with Ordaily, ask “what’s happening in the Grade 3 group?” and get a short, private catch up.

What you get, and what it will not do

  • A private catch up. Since yesterday by default, or further back if you ask.
  • A private alert. When someone tags you or writes your full name in the group.
  • Silence in the group. Ordaily never posts anything there.
  • Only from when it joined. It cannot catch you up on messages sent before Ordaily was added to the group.
  • Lite Plus only. Plain Lite has no groups.

Questions

How do I keep up with the school WhatsApp group without reading every message?
Add Ordaily’s group number to the class group on Lite Plus (R499 a month), then ask it “what’s happening in the class group?” in your own WhatsApp chat. You get a private catch up of what you missed, and a private alert when someone tags you or writes your full name. Ordaily never posts in the group.
How far back does the catch up go?
Since yesterday by default, and further back if you ask. It can only cover messages from after Ordaily joined the group: anything sent before it was added is not there to read.
Will Ordaily post in the class group?
No. Ordaily never posts anything in the group. The catch up and the alerts come to you privately, in your own chat with Ordaily.
When does it alert me?
When someone tags you in the group, or writes your full name. The alert comes to you privately on WhatsApp, so you can mute the group and still see what is meant for you.
Can it keep up with the lift club group and the sports group too?
Yes. Add Ordaily’s group number to each group you want covered, then ask about any of them by name, for example “what’s happening in the lift club group?”
Is this on Lite?
No. Groups are on Lite Plus, at R499 a month. Plain Lite, at R299 a month, covers your email, calendar and reminders but not your groups.

Mute the group. Ask for the short version.
